Chapter Twelve

Kṣemarāja’s original text

However, one who does not have the teaching of a true teacher and therefore does not have full understanding of this is thoroughly deluded by his own powers, because their true nature is concealed. Thus it is taught:

When one lacks realization of this,

one exists in the state of a saṃsārin:

that of being deluded by one’s own powers. || 12 ||

When one lacks realization of the fact that one is constantly performing the Five Acts, i.e., when that fact is not apparent to you because the unfolding of your inner strength, brought about by the Descent of Power, has not yet occurred, then you exist in the state of being deluded by your own powers. This state of delusion is one of being nailed down by the ‘spikes’ of various anxieties, doubts, and inhibitions, both worldly and religious. It is this that constitutes the state of being a saṃsārin.

As it is said in the sacred and venerable [scripture called] Union of All Heroes,

People are anxiously inhibited out of ignorance; because of it, there is creation and destruction [of limited realms of experience]…

All mantras are sounds, and all sounds are Śiva. |

To explain: the Supreme Power that is the Word is not different from the Light of Awareness, has the nature of the continuously arising Great Mantra, consists of fully expanded ‘I’-consciousness, and is pregnant with the entire circle of fifty powers from a to kṣa.

That same Power manifests the role of the limited perceiver through the Visionary, Intermediate, and Corporeal stages of the articulation of the Word. In that process, by not manifesting Herself in Her highest nature, She brings into play the differentiating cognitive activity of the limited perceiver. This activity changes moment-to-moment, and creates pictures of reality that are unclear and unshared. Moreover, this causes the prediscursive level—though it is always pure—to appear concealed by that cognitive activity.
